How to Join a College Committee
Serving on a committee is a great way to further the important work of the College as well as enhance your experience as a Fellow. It is also an excellent way for both newly inducted and established Fellows to develop new relationships in the College.
There are two distinct types of committees: State and Province Committees or General Committees. More about each of these categories is listed below:
STATE AND PROVINCE COMMITTEES
The core responsibility of the State and Province Committees is to identify, investigate and nominate qualified attorneys for Fellowship. State and Province Committees also engage in outreach efforts that include judging regional trial competitions sponsored by the College and providing trial advocacy training. Due to the nature of the committee work, the commitment and timelines are generally consistent year over year.
The State and Province Committees play a crucial role in recommending qualified trial attorneys for the College, ensuring con- tinuity and longevity. Additionally, these committees provide local engagement opportunities and foster the collegiality that is a hallmark of the College.
GENERAL COMMITTEES
The College’s General Committees fall into three broad categories: recommendation of honorees; administration and manage- ment; and areas of the law or legal system. Each has a specific mandate to guide their work, and they engage in activities such as publishing white papers, supporting advocacy training, contributing to federal rules changes, and much more.
There are nearly forty General Committees; a complete list of General Committees and their mandates can be found on the website, www.actl.com, but some examples are:
