The audience in San Diego had no problem filling in the missing words. Nor does AI. Jake Heller used these examples to explain how AI sifts through huge volumes of data—billions of sentences from every book, every article, every website—to look for patterns that allow it to predict what words come next and what words are responsive to a query. Sometimes AI gets it wrong. But then it learns from its mistakes. And it keeps getting better. And it plays this little game billions and billions of times over.
Jake Heller is the founder and CEO of Casetext, acquired by Thomson Reu- ters for $650 million in cash a month before Jake addressed us. Casetext uses artificial intelligence to make lawyers’ lives easier through legal research, doc- ument review, and the analysis of contracts, among other things.
