Michael Addis Beale, ’87, was eighty-three when he sud- denly and unexpectedly passed away on February 7, 2024. A rare Arizona native, Mike was born in Phoenix and attended Arizona State University and the University of Arizona. Mike had an extensive expertise in the history of World War II, as well as other pivotal
conflicts ranging from the Revolu- tionary War to the Vietnam War. He could speak knowl-
edgeably about tactics, challenges, and outcomes with the skill of a professor. In his final days he was completing a treatise on British monarchs entitled Brief Biographies Of
The English Monarchs (William The Conqueror To Queen Elizabeth II). Mike completed law school after serving with the 82nd Airborne Division; his practice included medical malpractice, aviation law, products liability, and utility lit- igation. Mike was a prankster and a witty raconteur. He played rugby until he and a gang of lawyers in their fifties could no longer run the field – or maybe they just ran out of bandages. Mike played with missing teeth, leg wounds requiring crutches, and stitches in places that should probably not be stitched. Mike is survived by his wife of forty years, Rosie, six children and nine grandchildren.
Saul Charles Belz, ’03, born April 14, 1942, passed peacefully at home on August 16, 2023, survived by his wife Betsy, their five children, and three grandchildren. A great life of eighty-one years,
the last six weeks were some of the best, as Saul and his old- est granddaughter spent the summer together eating Jerry’s snow cones. Popularly known as “Long Tall Slinky Saul,”
“Saulie,” “Zadie” or “Cat Daddy,” Saul was the epitome of cool; he had a beautiful voice, and once even opened for Bo Diddly. He also took a tap (certainly not a punch) from Mohammed Ali. Saul was an avid fan of the Memphis Tigers and the Memphis Grizzlies and could often be heard yelling for or at them.
Richard L. (Dick) Berdelle, ’88, was ninety-two when he died on August 6, 2021. Dick attended Marquette Univer- sity and Marquette Law School, graduating in 1953. He
was one of the top personal injury defense trial lawyers in Chicago. Dick was one of those rare individuals who could find the good in everyone he met. He genuinely gave his time and attention to all regardless of age or circumstance. Dick’s wife of forty-two years, Dolores “Dottie” Berdelle, predeceased him; Dick was survived by three children, eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Jared Malone Billings, ’76,
passed at the age of nine-
ty-two on March 12, 2024.
Jerry was born in Nashville;
his family moved to Miami
in 1935 and Jerry made Or-
lando home in 1962. Jerry
went to the University of
Florida on a basketball schol-
arship and transferred to the
University of Miami to finish his business and law degrees. After completing R.O.T.C., he served as a lieutenant in the Army and was assigned to Joint Task Force Seven which tested the first H-bomb in the Pacific at Enewetak atoll in the Marshall Islands. Jerry met and married Patsy Ruth McCord during law school and had three children, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jerry was a member of the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar and served on the Board of Trustees for Valencia Col- lege and as a trustee of the Greater Orlando Leadership Foundation.
Kenneth P. Borden Sr., ‘85, passed away on December 23, 2023 at the age of eighty-seven. Ken graduated from Brown University in 1958 (with honors) and Columbia University School of Law in 1961. He served in the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve as a JAG officer, after which he practiced in Providence until his retirement in 2005. Ken served as President of the Ponaganset Unit of the American Cancer Society and on the board of direc- tors of North West Mental Health. Ken’s hobbies included pistol shooting, amateur radio, photography and comput- ers (though hopefully not at the same time). Ken is sur- vived by his wife, Pamela, his son, and two grandchildren.
Richard L. Cease, ’89, was ninety at his death on July 29, 2018, and we are embarrassed that it took almost six years to learn of his passing. Richard was born in Seattle, raised in Alaska and went to college at the University of Oregon
