Mayor Suárez, a lawyer who is of counsel with Quinn Emmanuel LLP, was born to Rita and Xavier Suárez, who him- self was a three-time Miami Mayor and a lawyer. As one of four siblings, Mayor Suárez was raised in a family where being socially conscious was kind of a requirement. He graduated from Florida International University in the top ten percent of his class and later received his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Florida. Before becoming Miami’s Mayor in 2017, he served for eight years as a Commissioner on the City of Miami Commis- sion. Mayor Suárez currently serves as the President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and was recently named as one of 100 Future Leaders by Time, as well as a Rodel Fellow by the Aspen Institute. He is married to Gloria and is the proud father of two young children: Andrew and Gloriana. Mayor Suárez told us that Miami is built on a common desire shared by all: “to live in a community where opportunity is plentiful and a path to prosperity and happiness is possible for all.” He described Miami, which he said was the most diverse city in America, as a city that has become the beacon for “the American dream,” a city that opens the door to the American spirit of hard work. And a city, he said, where people feel safe, and where there is access to high-paying and high-quality careers. He described Miami as a city where one’s children and grandchildren will be able to thrive and grow. According to Mayor Suárez, the “Miami Miracle” is the story of a city that promotes human freedom and flourishes by keeping taxes low, securing streets and neighborhoods, and embracing innovation and risk taking. Mayor Suárez told the Fellows that he sees a future – not only of Miami’s but the country’s economy – that is based on technology. He has heavily recruited tech entrepreneurs to open up their offices and headquarters in Miami. And while other cities have spurned some of tech’s brightest innovators and entrepreneurs, Miami has welcomed them. To 13 JOURNAL MAYOR FRANCIS X. SUÁREZ WELCOME TO MIAMI FELLOWS WHO ATTENDED THE SPRING MEETING IN KEY BISCAYNE WERE WELCOMED TO MIAMI BY NONE OTHER THAN THE CITY OF MIAMI MAYOR HIMSELF, FRANCIS X. SUÁREZ. MAYOR SUÁREZ IS MIAMI’S 43RD MAYOR, AND THE FIRST MIAMI-BORN MAYOR IN THE CITY’S HISTORY. Mayor Suárez’s welcoming remarks to the Fellows centered on what he has referred to as the “Miami Miracle,” a civic agenda that has focused on bringing economic prosperity and a secure and safe living environment not just to a few but to all residents of Miami.
