Congratulations to Judicial Fellow Fred Stamp on his remarkable career on the bench and, also, on the renaming of his courthouse to the Frederick P. Stamp, Jr. Federal Building and United States Courthouse. all law clerks for the life-changing opportunity to work with Judge Stamp. “We saw a great example of a judge who could be described as: unfailingly kind to all; respectful to everyone, great and small, rich and poor; patient; unquestioned integrity; fearless; learned; humble; courteous; thoughtful; fair; service; unbiased; hard- working; dedicated; a man of faith; and a gentleman. . . . Greatness that is properly reflected today in the naming of this building.” Mark R. Hornak, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, brought congratulations from the twenty-five counties of the Western District of Pennsylvania. He told a delightful story of his own nomination interviews with the Justice Department and the White House in 2011. He was asked, if he was appointed, what three judges would he try and emulate. He named Judge Stamp and explained “Although we, as judges, do exactly the same thing every day, no two days are ever the same. . . . He knew and expressed to the lawyers that on happy days like today, or naturalizations, or admissions to the bar, it’s a wonderful time to be in the courtroom. But, every other day the courtroom was going to be filled with people that had big troubles, and that for each of them they hoped being in federal court was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It may have been the fiftieth time he, as a judge, did a particular task or presided over a certain hearing. But, for those people whose freedom, security, lives, dreams, hopes of educating their children, the businesses they started and ran, were at stake, that every single day as a federal trial judge you had to deliver a Super Bowl performance.” Judge Hornak went on to say that equal justice under the law is no easy path, so the hard work and deep understanding Judge Stamp displayed is the example he set for all judges, and all lawyers who aspire to become a judge. Judge Stamp, obviously moved by the entire celebration, recognized his family and thanked his many supporters and colleagues for such a wonderful day. He remarked that although he had heard about courthouse naming, he thought the honoree had to be dead. He assured us all that his recent physical exam proved he is very much alive and kicking! With great gratitude, Judge Stamp thanked every one of his long-time staff members and those in the courthouse for making his daily work life enjoyable, efficient and safe. By way of special response to Judge Johnston, he simply said “I’ll say to my colleagues on the bench, you know you’re old when one of your law clerks is a Chief Judge in a neighboring district.” Susan S.
