SPRING 2023 NEW INDUCTEES SEVENTY-FOUR NEW FELLOWS FROM THIRTY-ONE DIFFERENT STATES AND PROVINCES WERE INDUCTED AT THE 2023 SPRING MEETING IN KEY BISCAYNE. AT THE LUNCHEON PRECEDING THEIR INDUCTION, PAST PRESIDENT DOUG YOUNG EXPLAINED TO THEM HOW THEY WERE CHOSEN: “This afternoon and this evening are primarily about the induct- ees. It’s a great opportunity for us to remind ourselves how much our two countries are blessed by great advocates; advocates today, and those who have gone before us. “You heard Justice Breyer this morning say that law is not a sci- ence, and you heard reference at the last session in the morning when Rosie Abella’s name was invoked. Justice Abella was a dis- tinguished justice of the Canadian Supreme Court and she said, much like Justice Breyer said, that justice is the application of law to life, not the application of law to facts, and she went on to say that it’s the majesty of justice that is the law’s purpose. Law on its own is just a series of words and rules. Unless it is something that contributes to the possibility of justice, it is essentially unfulfilled. “Great words from a great advocate and jurist, and sentiments that in many ways frame what we talk about today, because today we’re celebrating great lawyers who represent the highest 59 JOURNAL
