ERITAGE OF THE COLLEGE
Gordon J. Kuski, K.C.
Just ask Rob Adams, Regent of Region V of the College. Or his predecessors, Greg Lederer, Kathleen Petersen, Mike Kinney or Phil Garrison. Whenever the Regent calls about a potential candidate for Fellowship in Saskatchewan, universally, the local Fellow who is called responds “ask Gord.”
Regina Fellow James Ehmann explains. “Throughout my career Gord has been the guy at the Saskatchewan Bar.” Saskatoon Fellow Brian Pfefferle describes Gord as the “legal royalty of the Saskatchewan Bar.” Gord’s law partner, Province Committee Chair Aaron Fox, believes that if any non-Saskatchewan Canadian lawyer has a legal issue in Saskatchewan, their first thought should be “Let’s call Gord.”
Gord’s father, Lauri Kuski, emigrated from Finland to Canada when he was only five years old. Lauri began his life-long career with the Canadian National Railway when he was thirteen. Gord’s mother, Gladys “Jean” Carveth, came from an English background. Lauri was an excel- lent musician who created a family band, comprised mostly of their children, in which Gord played the clarinet, performing at dances and weddings.
Gord grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, attending Martin Colle- giate Institute. Gord moved on to the University of Regina, where his excellent grades allowed him to start law school at the University of Saskatchewan after only two years.
Gord was not well acquainted with any lawyers when he applied for law school. But people had always told him “doctors and lawyers make the big money,” and since he had no interest in medicine, Gord chose law school. He graduated at the top of his class and was named the Gold Medalist in 1971.
